no way dude. The original stadium was intimate and gave chills. The new stadium is a billboard promo. New Stadium scoreboard sucks and its too cold. old stadium had a warm feeling and made you feel like you were on top of the action.

According to the City, demolition should be completed early next year.
For the most part…the original Yankee stadium was torn down in the early 70s, and what took its place is essentially a 1970s era stadium. While it is sad to see it torn down, it was the pre-1970s stadium that has most of that Yankees storied history.
Uhg, Gerry you are an idiot. You really don’t have an understanding of the renovation.
If you know a lot about the renovation in the 70’s, please share. I’ve always been curious to know exactly how much of the original stadium is still standing (for now). I know that when that piece fell out of the upper deck into the loge in 98(?), they said it was a piece of the original 1923 construction. Did they keep the steel skeleton? Any suggested readings on this subject?
The upper deck, loge level, bleachers, and about half the field level (starting from the walkway and back) are from the original 1923 stadium. Most of the exterior is from the original stadium. The last 8 rows or so of the upper deck are from the ’70s renovation, as are the escalator pods on the outside, and the light standards, and The Bat. Monument Park was created in the 70s renovation, as well as the bullpens and the frieze in the outfield. Hope I helped!
If you look closely at the concrete at the top of the UD you can see the difference in color from the old and ‘new’ that they added on….

I’m a Phillies fan, and after seeing the stadium wrapped in black during the series I was curious to see more about its demoltion, great site, keep up the good work.I will continue to check back for updates. This is very sad.
Its been an interesting website to develop to say the least. The demolition should really start picking up steam in the coming weeks.

they asked for them to be removed. they own them…its within their right. probably something having to do with my site getting more traffic to those images than their own website. oh well.
Now that this group of players brought you back a World Series title and that they’ll probably bring you 2 or 3 more in the next 5 years if they avoid injuries (especially CC, Texeira and the young releivers) and A-Rod keep his newly found play-offs motivation, could young Steinbrenner use a couple 2-3 out of the extra 50 or 100 millions this title will probably bring him to take a stand and help save Gate 2 ? I know I’m too naive about money,
but next time I go to New York, I’ll be more motivated to spend my money to at least visit the new “Easy Homers” stadium if I can go across the street and watch something other than another “old stadium” plaque in front of Heritage Park (I’ve read and understand that kids in this area need a new park.) NY mayor’s office and Steinbrenner probably would not mind about more money being spent in the area.

The stadium can still be saved, I think if NYers were to put into legislation right away to create a bill to stop this and think about it for a year until a civilized idea could be utilized for the stadium. I am sure they could raise enough cash to save the stadium from the tolls for a month.

I cannot believe the people of NY are letting the mayor bring the house down to have a stupid park. People once its down its down, then its too late to say OPPS, we shouldn’t have done that.

10.2 % unemployment with the possibility of further problems due to the weakening of the dollar, etc., two wars being waged simultaneously, the possibility of the 9/11 mastermind being moved to NY for trial and you want the NY State Legislature to enact emergency legislation to save a portion of a stadium that no longer serves any purpose. Come on folks, I live and die by the NYY’s but let’s get our priorities straight here.
go read some of the PDFs that ive posted in the last 2 months…the money to save gate 2 is being raised. i plan on buying a paving brick or two if/when they become available.

As a long time Tigers fan, I feel your pain. We hung on to Tiger Stadium for almost 10 years, but in the end, just this summer, Detroit needed another vacant lot more than a beautiful piece of history that would remind folks of the good old days.
Yankee Stadium is not just another park, the greatest baseball player of all time worked and played here. The good old days is a reminder of our past and should never be removed because the city needs a park for kids to play in. People are always in a rush to move on, whenever we rush we always look back and make mistakes. Once this palace is gone, you erase another piece of New York’s history and our country. Future fans will look back and wonder what our current politicians were thinking, just like the BIGGEST blunder in american history when we brought all those people over here for slaves from africa. Just imagine what our country would be like now without that mistake on our books.
I guess it’s hard to say goodbye, but we’ve gotten a lot of chances to do it now. And remember the old stadium was left without a playoff appearance while the new one brought a championship.
The only thing that the new stadium had to do with winning a championship is that it allowed for a few more wins because of cheap home runs.
The crowd noise at NYS is worse than at a Mets game now.
